Meet The Team
Say hello to the Bourne Water Dragons club members and learn more about us.
David Buckland
David (Dave) is fortunate enough not to have had cancer, but he supports us in every way including becoming a coach and Level 2 Helm.
Cathy Hurst
Breast cancer survivor
Cathy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. She exercises weekly and has been a member of her local gym for more years than she cares to remember. As a valued member, Cathy really enjoys her helming. Cathy is still working full-time but has started the countdown to retirement - 14 months and counting!
Bob King
Non-Hodgkin’s Follicular Lymphoma survivor
Bob is a member of both BWD and MENTALK - a group for men who have had or have cancer or whose loved ones have been affected by cancer. Bob also loves cruising the oceans and watching Grand Prix racing. If looking after grandchildren is a hobby that's one and walks down by the sea and in the New Forest. He loves living by the sea and river but dislikes cold water swimming.
Jane Young
Breast cancer survivor
For many years, Jane has worked the Front of House, be it in Leisure Clubs or Hotels. Jane loves travelling anywhere, any time and has two wonderful sons, a gorgeous granddaughter and a very patient husband. She likes to keep busy in the garden or helping out at the New Forest Cake House with her brother.
Roy Young
Prostate cancer survivor
A printer by trade, Roy is a family man with 2 sons and a loving wife of 50 years. Roy's cancer (prostate) is now in its twelfth year of remission. He enjoys most sports, soccer, golf, cricket, being his favourites. Though, he now only watches it on TV or as a spectator.
Peter Thorne
Breast cancer survivor
Peter is one of many men diagnosed with Breast cancer. Unusual, you might think, but there are many men with Breast cancer. The latest figures shown were around 55,000 women, and 370 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Peter is another valued member of the BWD.
Cath Groome
Follicular lymphoma survivor
Cath became interested in Bourne Water Dragons when she picked up a leaflet at the Jigsaw Unit at Bournemouth University Hospital Dorset (UHD). She has been enjoying the tranquil evening excursions and the comradery of Bourne Water Dragons since joining.
Valerie Kelly
It is truly great to be a member of such a wonderful team of caring and inspiring people. I just love the banter as we proceed on our journey and one or two poems have emerged as members observed antics in the boat. It is up to the individual if they want to discuss their cancer journey or not. Everyone’s story is different yet we all have a common goal, to keep fit, keep smiling and carry on.
Phil Roberts
Phil is a member of Bourne Water Dragons, but also an important member of the Bournemouth Sea Cadets.
Helen Steege
Breast cancer survivor
Helen is a Trustee of Bourne Water Dragons, a much valued member and has the role of Membership Administrator
Ian Stephenson
Prostate cancer survivor
Having been a member of the Bourne Water Dragons for a good while now, Ian was delighted to take on the challenge of Chairman for such a worthy course. He has always enjoyed the fitness aspect of life; add fun, laughter and a great team and we are sorted! Ian's principal interests include skiing, walking the dog, horses and of course, Dragon Boats.
